Miller Smart-Strip Data Cable Jacket Stripper - 0.03" to 0.39" (0.75 to 10 mm), UTP & STP

When our Ripley (Miller) sales rep stopped in to show us their new SMART-STRIP, we knew immediately our customers were going to love it. We couldn't wait to get this tool in their hands. The Miller SMART-STRIP is simple to adjust, simple to operate, made really well, and more importantly your co-workers are going to be jealous when they see you using it.

The SMART-STRIP from Ripley is an insulation cutting tool for various insulated wire or cable in the 0.03" - 0.39" range. The tool typically works on soft vinyl jackets found on CAT5, CAT6, CAT7, or other data network cable. The stripping blade of the SMART-STRIP is adjustable for depth of cut from 0 - 1/8" max.

Please Note:

If this is your first time using an adjustable stripper, make sure you adjust the tool so the blade is barely visible. The goal is to lightly score the jacket and break it off.

I gave it a 4 because we can’t use it for thicker cables like the gamechanger osp . For cat5 or cat6 regular is great . If you can make a tool with an open head to accommodate for thinker cable will be great . This way I don’t have to carry two different ones. Thank you

The good:

It's incredibly adjustable, and can take a super shallow cut, with fine control over the depth, better than any other tool I've used.

The adjustment doesn't seem to drift, even without an explicit locking or friction mechanism.

It's also fairly compact, light, and cheap.

The bad:

The plastics' fit and finish is poor, sharp edges everywhere. Everything works, but it's uncomfortable to adjust because your fingers are scraping an unbroken edge. I spent a minute with a deburring tool and it's a lot more comfortable to use now.

The cutting blade isn't quite centered inside the body, and there's no edge-on view of the cable during insertion, so it's hard to place the strip precisely. Not a big deal for cat-5, but obnoxious for coax prep.

There's no graduation to record and recover depth settings. So if you want to prep several cable types, you have to eyeball it and then dial it in each time, or just have several copies of the tool.

I wish I had this tool years ago.
Tool works great, works on lots of different types of cable and doesn't cut the inner insulation if adjusted properly.
