The flat nail plate has protected wire in studs the same clumsy way for a century: one side at a time, bulging the drywall, with barbs waiting for your thumb.
Madison Electric's Smart Shield rethinks the whole part. It's a cylindrical steel nail guard that inserts INTO the drilled stud hole, housing the wire or cable inside a heat-treated, zinc-plated steel tube — protecting it from nails and screws arriving from BOTH sides of the stud with a single piece, where flat plates need one per face.
Because it sits inside the bore instead of on the stud face, the Smart Shield eliminates the drywall bulge that surface-mounted plates cause.
It's faster and easier to install than nailing plates on, it won't bend during installation the way flat plates do, and it can be installed before OR after the cable is placed — a rough-in flexibility flat plates can't offer. It resists direct strikes from nail guns and screws, preventing the punctured-conductor shorts that start fires, and it's safer to handle with no protruding barbs. The zinc plating also reduces electrolysis.
